Inland Valley News celebrates the entrepreneurs, neighborhood shops and family-owned businesses that help keep the Inland Empire’s economy moving
Throughout July, Inland Valley News is recognizing National Independent Retailer Month by shining a spotlight on the locally owned businesses that serve as the backbone of communities across the Inland Empire.
From neighborhood restaurants and beauty salons to boutiques, bookstores, specialty shops and professional service providers, independent retailers do far more than sell products. They create jobs, support families, sponsor youth programs and school activities, contribute to local causes and bring identity and character to the neighborhoods they serve.
For many communities, particularly Black and other historically underserved communities, entrepreneurship has also provided a path toward economic independence, generational wealth and greater control over where local dollars are invested.
Yet small business ownership remains challenging. Independent retailers often operate with fewer resources than national chains while managing rising costs, staffing needs, changing consumer habits and competition from large online marketplaces. Every purchase, referral, positive review and social media share can make a meaningful difference.
That is why Inland Valley News is spending the month highlighting independent retailers throughout its coverage area. Each week, the newspaper will feature a different business category and introduce readers to entrepreneurs whose products, services and investments strengthen the region.
The campaign began with local restaurants—businesses that often serve as gathering places as well as sources of employment and community pride. Throughout the remainder of the month, IVN will continue showcasing retailers and service providers across additional industries, encouraging readers to discover new businesses and revisit longtime neighborhood favorites.
Supporting an independent retailer does not always require a large purchase. Residents can help by choosing a local business when possible, recommending it to friends, following and sharing its social media content, leaving a thoughtful online review or purchasing a gift card for future use.
These seemingly small decisions can have a lasting impact. Money spent at a locally owned business is more likely to circulate within the community through employee wages, local vendors, charitable giving and other neighborhood investments.
Independent Retailer Month is also an opportunity to recognize the people behind the storefronts. Many entrepreneurs invest their personal savings, work long hours, and make significant sacrifices to build businesses that meet community needs. Their stories deserve to be seen, supported, and celebrated—not only in July but throughout the year.
For more than three decades, Inland Valley News has worked to amplify local voices and connect residents with the people, institutions and businesses shaping the region. This month’s independent retailer initiative continues that commitment by giving entrepreneurs a platform to tell their stories while helping readers intentionally support the local economy.
Throughout July, readers are invited to follow IVN’s weekly features, visit the businesses being highlighted and nominate independent retailers that deserve recognition.
Because when independent retailers thrive, they create opportunities that reach far beyond their doors—and the entire community benefits.
