Chaffey College Governing Board Mandates COVID-19 Vaccination

On August 17, 2021, the Chaffey Community College District Governing Board held a special meeting to consider a proposed resolution regarding mandatory COVID-19 requirements for employees, volunteers and students.

Prior the board voting on the resolution, Dr. James Lally, Chief Medical Officer for Health Service Alliance – the umbrella organization forChino Valley Community Health Center and Montclair Community Health Center – presented information about the significance of the vaccine and its critical importance to the health of the community.

Following this, Dr. Lally addressed questions from members of the public. The district also received 13 public comments, which were all read aloud at the meeting.  The board ultimately voted unanimously to pass Resolution 81721 (COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate). The board also approved Board Policy 3507 (COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement).

When asked about the resolution, Chaffey College Superintendent/President Dr. Henry Shannon said, “It is a moral responsibility for us to protect our faculty, students and staff and that is why Chaffey College is committed to ensuring as many of our employees are vaccinated as possible.”

Chaffey’s administration is now in the process of developing a mandatory vaccination implementation plan for students, volunteers and employees that includes any necessary exemptions required by law.  The district has already reached out the respective unions to invite them to negotiate the effects of the decision to mandate the vaccine.

Chaffey College follows other colleges such as the University of California and California State University systems, as well as all K-12 public and private schools, in requiring employees and students to be vaccinated for COVID-19.
