Do you happen to be one of the people that does not bother to vote? Do you realize that your vote matters to
more than just you and your family? The vote that you cast today may also be the voice for those who feel
hopeless and helpless tomorrow. To make wise choices and to make a real difference you must be clear about
what matters to you and what you believe in? We may be living in perilous and uncertain times, but
nonetheless, we must stay diligent and make sure our vote counts. There is always hope for a better tomorrow.
There are many important issues during midterm elections. In most elections we think about big ticket items
such as who will be the next president, but during midterm elections we still have just as much at stake, if not
more, on the state, county, and local levels. It has been proven that only half the number of registered voters
vote during the midterms. For those of us that exercise our right to vote we may be the only voice for the
voiceless. There are those that legitimately do not have the right to vote or are too young. I urge you to please
take the time to read and understand the various candidates, issues, and measures on the ballot. If you still are
not clear on who, what, or how to vote, then seek wise counsel. Do not guess.
When seeking advice regarding how to vote you also must be careful. We cannot make our choices based on
just other people’s thoughts or opinions. We must research facts against propaganda. It is no secret that
misinformation is put out every day through ads and marketing efforts. The problem with this is that if
misinformation is shared repeatedly, it eventually begins to be thought of as the truth, even if it is not. There are
many grassroot organizations and nonpartisan groups that research each of the issues that can give you clear
information if you need it.
There is a saying where much is given much is required, this is true for those of us whose ancestors died for us
to have the right and privilege to make our voices heard and our votes count. We cannot sit on the sidelines and
complain if we do not like what is happening within our government, no matter what level, if we are not willing
to get involved and do our part. We also must hold our elected officials responsible to carry out their
commitments and their word for what they say they would do. Plato said, “One of the penalties for refusing to
participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.” We can make sure this does not
happen, but only if we participate in the process.
No matter what our race, creed, ethnicity, political preference, or economic status, there comes a time when we
need to be concerned about the greater good for the wellbeing of all mankind. The choices and decisions we
make today will affect future generations. Get out and vote and make it your mission to encourage everyone
you know to do their part and vote. Now more than ever we must be about the business of holding our
government responsible for the wellbeing of all its citizens.
