Rialto, CA — A violent altercation between two students at Jehue Middle School on March 10 has sparked concern and community discussion after video footage of the incident circulated on social media.

The Colton Police Department and the Rialto Unified School District are investigating the confrontation, which left a 14-year-old girl briefly unconscious.

The video, recorded by a student, shows a 14-year-old male student restraining a female student, pressing his hand against her head before pushing her into a table.

The girl then grabs a laptop and throws it at him, prompting the male student to grab her and slam her head into the table.

The girl collapses to the floor, motionless for a brief period, before another student helps her up.

The Colton Police Department issued a statement confirming that officers responded to the school and conducted an investigation, including interviews with the teacher and multiple witnesses.

According to the police, the viral video captures only a minute and five seconds of the incident and does not show that the male student was previously struck multiple times with a metal object by the female student.

Both students involved were cited by the police and released to their parents. The case has been forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, Juvenile Division, for further review.

On March 13, Black clergy members and community organizers held a press conference in front of the middle school, calling attention to the potential racial tensions surrounding the altercation and condemning the violent nature of the incident.

The Rialto Unified School District released a statement acknowledging the “disturbing incident” and reaffirmed its stance against violence and hate speech.

“The District acted promptly and contacted the parents of the students involved, and medical aid was also provided,” wrote Rialto USD spokeswoman Syeda Jafri. “Corrective measures have been implemented, and we are working to ensure a safe learning environment.”

Jehue Middle School Principal Carolyn Eide also addressed the situation, assuring parents that the school is taking disciplinary action and working to support students and staff.

“While details of student discipline cannot be shared, this incident is being taken very seriously,” Eide stated.

At the press conference, several students provided their version of events, offering context not seen in the viral footage.

One student claimed the dispute began over a SpongeBob-themed pencil.

According to him, the female student initially lent her pencil to another student who then passed it to a friend.

When she asked for it back and did not receive a response, she allegedly began swinging a metal Hydro Flask at the other student, hitting him multiple times, he claims.

Another student noted that a substitute teacher was present but did not intervene beyond calling security.

“The teacher just sat at his desk, watching. He didn’t step in to break up the fight,” he stated.

Some students defended the male student’s actions, arguing that he was trying to protect himself. Others, including community members at the press conference, questioned whether his response, slamming the girl into the table, was an appropriate reaction.

“Regardless of what led up to it, she did not deserve to be unconscious because of this situation,” said one community member. “Where was the compassion?”

The incident has ignited broader discussions about school safety, racial tensions and the role of educators in preventing and de-escalating student conflicts.

In the meantime, Jehue Middle School remains under heightened scrutiny, with district officials pledging to reinforce anti-bullying and conflict resolution policies.
