Montclair Honors Volunteers, Introduces New Police Officers at April Council Meeting

The Montclair City Council celebrated community spirit and welcomed new additions to its police force during a meeting on April 21.

One of the evening’s highlights was the Community Activities Commission’s annual Volunteer Recognition Awards. This year, 15 volunteers were honored for their contributions to the Montclair community.

Community Activities Commission Chair Richard Escalante introduced the honorees, praising their dedication.

“These individuals are the stars of our community,” Escalante said. “Their time and efforts have contributed to the quality of life in Montclair.”

Among those recognized were Rowena Wallace-Rush, a senior companion volunteer for AgingNext; Brandon Joiner and Tina Wy, key figures at the Christian Development Center; Bridget Day and Jose Flores, contributors to the Montclair Senior Center; and Coach Keith Robinson, who has dedicated 32 years to the city’s youth basketball league.

Certificates were presented by representatives from the offices of Senator Susan Rubio, Assemblymember Michelle Rodriguez and County Supervisor Curt Hagman.

Following the volunteer presentations, Montclair Police Chief Robert Reed introduced two new officers: Officer Baltazar Gallardo and Officer Joshua Foster.

Officer Gallardo previously served in Brawley, while Officer Foster has a background with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside Police Department.

“We’re thankful they chose Montclair,” Chief Reed said. “They bring a wealth of experience that will enhance the safety of our community.”

Public comment during the meeting featured Montclair Chamber of Commerce representative Tenise Johnson, who presented a $1,800 donation to the Montclair Community Foundation to support the Montclair to College Program.

Johnson also promoted an upcoming “flash mob” lunch at Gina’s Chicken and Pizza, a new business on Holt Boulevard, encouraging residents to support local businesses.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Montclair’s economy,” Johnson said.

Council members echoed the sentiment, urging the community to support Gina’s and emphasizing the importance of helping new owners succeed.

The council also addressed several administrative matters, including approving an agreement to extend the Montclair After-School Program through the 2026-27 school year.

Council Member Corysa Martinez and others praised the program’s impact and noted that funding is largely grant-supported, easing financial concerns for the city.

Council Member Bill Ruh provided updates on his recent travels using mass transit, reflecting on cultural and demographic observations during his trip. He also shared a personal story about attending an outdoor Mass celebrated by Pope Francis during a trip to Washington, D.C., highlighting the late pontiff’s message of inclusion and compassion.

Council Member Ben Lopez raised ongoing concerns about unauthorized truck traffic along Monte Vista Avenue, noting resident complaints and calling for continued enforcement and education.

Lopez also asked the council to adjourn the meeting in memory of Enedelia Soledad Ramirez, a 17-year-old Montclair resident who passed away earlier that day.

“She brought joy to her family despite the challenges she faced,” Lopez said. “May her memory be a blessing.”

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for May 5, 2025, at 7 p.m.
