San Bernardino, CA- On Aug. 6 at Operation Grace’s headquarters, more than a hundred people gathered ahead of the new school year to attend the organization’s Community Day, where families received backpacks, school supplies, food, information about community services, participated in raffles, and had fun with extracurricular activities.
From 6 to 8 p.m., families gathered to catch up with one another and receive school supplies from Operation Grace’s staff and volunteers. More than just a giveaway, families participated in Jenga, tug-of-war, jump rope, a game truck, and giveaways!
This tradition dates back more than 20 years, when the pastor of Grace Chapel coordinated an event to help families prepare for the new year.

“It means a lot because it makes them feel like they are not alone, to have someone to support them and be a voice for them to be heard. School supplies are expensive, it’s one less burden for a parent to have.”

Volunteer Nayely explains the importance of giving back to the community.
“It’s amazing to see the community receive the services we provide. The joy the kids have receiving the supplies is special to me. Events like this are important to bring the community together.”
Organizations that came together to provide information about their services include, Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio, Mother’s Nutritional Center, and WellBe Health Pace.
Attending Community Day meant a lot to father Larry, who appreciated what Community Day stands for.
“I came with my kids to enjoy festival time, get school supplies, food, and to get to know the community a little bit more. Receiving school supplies means a lot, you get a better start to the school year. The raffles are exciting, even though I didn’t win anything, it is exciting to see other people win.”
Community Day brought families together for the new school year while providing school supplies, entertainment, raffle prizes, and food. This event reminded families that support is always available, even during difficult times.
