Upland, CA — Every April, we recognize Stress Awareness Month, a national observance to bring attention to the negative effects of chronic stress and to promote healthier ways of coping. In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become almost unavoidable. Between work responsibilities, family obligations, financial pressures, and the constant noise of modern life, many people feel like they are carrying more than they were ever meant to carry. But stress is more than just a feeling of being overwhelmed. When left unchecked, stress can quietly affect every part of our lives physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Stress Awareness Month reminds us that while stress may be common, it should never be considered normal or inevitable. Instead, it is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and learn how to better care for us.
Many people underestimate how deeply stress can affect the body. Long-term stress has been linked to headaches, stomach disorders, anxiety, depression, and even an increased risk of heart disease. Our bodies were designed to respond to temporary stress, such as a challenging situation or a moment of danger. However, when stress becomes constant, our minds and bodies struggle to recover. Over time, chronic stress can drain our energy, cloud our judgment, and make it difficult to show up as our best selves at home, at work, and in our communities. This is why education and awareness are so important. Stress Awareness Month encourages us to understand the causes of what many experts now call the “stress epidemic.”
In my work as The Purpose Partner, I often talk about how many women find themselves standing at important crossroads in life. A crossroads is that moment when life demands a decision, a change, or a new direction. Stress often shows up strongest at these crossroads. It may come when someone is navigating a career transition, caring for aging parents, raising children, managing a household, or trying to balance professional responsibilities with personal well-being. Sometimes stress arises simply because we are trying to carry too much on our own. The key is not pretending that stress doesn’t exist. The key is learning how to recognize it and respond to it in healthy ways.
The second pillar of the Purpose Partner framework is becoming unshakable. Being unshakable does not mean that life will never be difficult or that stress will never appear. Instead, it means developing the inner resilience to remain steady even when circumstances are challenging. One of the first steps toward becoming unshakable is acknowledging when stress is present and giving ourselves permission to slow down. Stress Awareness Month encourages several practical strategies for managing stress, such as getting regular exercise and eating balanced meals. Making sure we get enough rest, drink plenty of water, and seeking professional help when necessary. These practices may seem simple, but they are powerful tools for protecting our well-being. Another important thing to ask ourselves may be what is truly mine to carry, and what do I need to release?” Sometimes stress is not caused by what we must do, but by what we believe we must do.
The third pillar of the Purpose Partner philosophy is strategic grace. Strategic grace means approaching life with intentional wisdom, choosing responses rather than reacting to pressure. When stress builds up, many of us move into survival mode. We rush, we worry, and we push ourselves harder. Strategic grace reminds us that strength is not always found in pushing forward. Sometimes strength is found in stepping back. This might look like setting healthy boundaries, adjusting expectations, delegating responsibilities, or simply taking time to rest and reflect. Stress Awareness Month also highlights the importance of identifying stress in the workplace. Many professionals experience pressure related to deadlines, expectations, and responsibilities. By identifying these stressors, organizations and individuals can begin to create healthier environments that support both productivity and well-being. Stress may be a part of life, but it does not have to control our lives.
