Countywide — Los Angeles County Black Vaccination Rates Up Slightly

Black Wednesdays COVID-19 – The Los Angeles County Public Health Department reported 504 new Covid-19 cases among Blacks, down by 10 cases. The County also recorded 39 deaths among Blacks since last Tuesday, up by one (1) soul. In Los Angeles County the total number of diagnosed Black cases are 42,448 with 1,700 deaths. Black Women Rally for Action – Los Angeles County mourns with all the family members, friends, and individuals who experienced losses and illness. 

The sharp decreases in deaths and cases experienced after the January surge have leveled off at unacceptable rates. Between 33 and 51 deaths have occurred each week over the last six weeks, except for backlogged cases added in early March. The current rates are 1,000% higher than low rates recorded in October 2020 before the holiday surge. The current rates should not be acceptable. Blacks have proven that we can lower the rates to three deaths a week.  It is a race against time to increase vaccination rates and safe practices so that 30 Black families a week are not experiencing deaths of loved ones due to Covid-19.

Black Women Rally for Action – Los Angeles County praises the Board of Supervisors for hearing our advocacy pleas for In-Home Support Services (IHSS) workers support in aiding home-bound residents with securing vaccinations. The Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed, at their March 23, 2021 meeting, to study how County employed IHSS workers can support community-based vaccination efforts in high-need areas

According to the State of California, only 4.4% of the residents in Los Angeles County receiving at least one dose of a vaccine was Black, up from 4.3% last week.

Black Women Rally for Action – Los Angeles County is a coalition of individuals and groups who provide a mechanism for Los Angeles County Black women to advocate on behalf of their health and well-being. The coalition, which does not accept government grant funding, is dedicated to advancing health, economic, and social equity for all Los Angeles County Black women through direct action and connection to effective resources.  In April 2020, the group launched a COVID-19 social media outreach campaign to prevent and reduce Covid-19 impact in the Black community.
