Meet the Woman Helping Black Families Break the GoFundMe Funeral Cycle

Nationwide — For far too many Black families, GoFundMe has become the new “life insurance” — and the burden shows up at the worst possible time: during grief, loss, and financial crisis. But for Nikita Dates, the Founder and CEO of Covered With Nikita, this issue is deeply personal.

Over a short period of time, three of her close family members passed away — and none of them had life insurance. What followed was heartbreaking: her family turning to her for money, and then watching them create GoFundMe campaigns to cover funeral costs.

“I felt helpless,” Nikita said. “Not because I couldn’t help — but because I knew this cycle shouldn’t exist in the first place. Nobody should have to pass the hat to bury their loved ones.”

That moment became the turning point. With a background in finance and a passion for helping families, Nikita made a life-changing decision: She became a licensed insurance professional. She wanted to make sure no other family experienced the same combination of grief, debt, and last-minute fundraising that hers did.

Today, she is known across her community as “The No More GoFundMe Chick” — a name that reflects her mission to help families replace panic with preparation. Her message is simple, powerful, and necessary: “Preparation is love. GoFundMe is not a plan — it’s a reaction.”

Nikita is committed to educating the Black community on the importance of real coverage, living benefits, and long-term financial protection. She’s not just selling policies — she’s building awareness and shifting culture.

To support that mission, she recently released a free consumer guide titled: “The 7 Biggest Lies About Life Insurance.” The guide breaks down the myths and misunderstandings that keep families unprotected — from “I’ll get a policy later” to “I’ve got coverage through my job.” Anyone can download the free guide at CoveredWithNikita.com

Nikita’s five-year goal is bold and intentional: Help 100,000 families get properly protected by 2030. Her vision is to eliminate the financial trauma that comes with sudden death and to empower families with policies that cover both life and legacy.

“If my story teaches anything, it’s that no family should grieve and go broke at the same time.”
